Laura & Chris’ Rustic Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse Wedding – Los Olivos, California

Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse Wedding

Laura and Chris and were brought together by three main things: Great music, great friends, and great love. After meeting through friends, Laura asked Chris for guitar lessons in order to get to know him better; she never did learn to play the guitar, but instead she fell in love with Chris. Six years later, they wanted to bring those same three things together as they celebrated their love. Laura and Chris were married at our favorite venue- The Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse where they celebrated their great love with 80 of their closest friends and family, to the sound track of some incredible music. Along with all of the sweet details like their handmade signs and florals put together by Laura’s mother, the couple sang a beautiful, original song to each other during the reception (while I sat in behind my camera blubbering like a baby)

Beyond getting to work with this wonderful couple, their families, and their friends, we had the pleasure of working with some incredible vendors for this wedding, including Kelley and Sariah from Poppies and Peonies Events and Island View Catering, who provided some of the best wedding food we have ever had!

You can see their full wedding gallery here through PASS. We just love PASS, don’t you?

Tony & Amanda’s Romantic Garden Wedding – The Christmas House Inn, California

Tony and Amanda had their beautiful garden style wedding at The Christmas House Inn in Rancho Cucamonga California. Their stunning florals that depicted the romance of the day were crafted by Heather of Twig & Twine. The sweet romantic style of the wedding perfectly depicts the love between Tony and Amanda. Between there sweet giggles and warm cuddles, we were honored to capture the love of this couple. We were lucky enough to work with a great team on this wedding including Peter Chang with studio 205 films and the girls of Grace Lin makeup

Alex & James – Romantic Santa Barbara Courthouse Elopement – Four Seasons Biltmore, California

Thank you for tomorrow.” a phrase we don’t think about often- the excitement and gratitude for a coming day of love and hope. “Thank you for tomorrow”  engraved into their wedding bands, and wound into their vows- a reminder of unconditional love and a very long future together.

Alex grew up coming to Santa Barbara, it was always “her place,” where she would come to get away, to relax, and to enjoy life. So when the topic of marriage came up between Alex and James, they knew they wanted to elope and that Santa Barbara was the perfect place. They didn’t announce their engagement to anyone. When James’ sister announced she would be flying in for Christmas they surprised her with the news and asked her to be a part of their day.

It was the weekend before Christmas and the weather was sunny and pleasant; a perfect fit for such a bright and bubbly couple. They celebrated their day at The Biltmore in Santa Barbara and were married in the stunning Mural Room of the Santa Barbara Courthouse.

“Thank you for yesterday, thank you for today, and thank you for tomorrow.”

Krista – Rustic Natural Boudoir Session – Knapp’s Castle, Santa Barbara

I am of the opinion that a woman is sexy simply because she is a woman. No corsets, fishnets or fake lashes necessary. So when Krista sent me this pinterest board, I knew we were on the exact same page. For their anniversary, Krista decided that she wanted to surprise her boyfriend with a beautiful, handcrafted book filled with these personal and romantic images from her rustic natural boudoir session. Being passionate about nature and the outdoors, she felt it was important for the shoot to take place in a natural location with a rustic feel, so we headed to Santa Barbara’s Knapp’s castle to capture these intimate portraits.

A boudoir session can be can be a beautiful present for a lover, but an even better present for yourself. If conducted the right way, these shoots can empower a woman; make her feel beautiful, sexy, and even more confident in her own skin. In the words of Krista; “I would be lying if I said that this boudoir session didn’t give me a buttload of confidence! William loves the book (he can’t put it down) and that puts a cheeky grin on my face! ”

Hiring Your Wedding Photographer – Some Common Questions & Answers

So you have found your dream wedding photographer! Congratulations! Now what?…

Well first, a disclaimer: You’re wedding is a one-time thing. It is one of the most glorious days of your life, and while you may want the best rentals or food or flowers, soon you will forget all of those details. Years down the road all you will have are the memories and the photos. Your wedding photos will likely be hung up in your house for the rest of your lives. Your children and your grandchildren will treasure your wedding photos.

With that being said – hiring your wedding photographer is an INVESTMENT – so make them a PRIORITY!

shaun and skyla walton wedding photography - romantic montecito backyard wedding santa barbara california

Now, back to what I was getting at!

How do we decide how much coverage to go with?  Most couples hire their wedding photographer for about eight to ten hours of coverage. However, each wedding and its timeline differs. Take a look at our post on how to plan you wedding photography schedule, if you are still unsure about how much time to book your wedding photographer for, let them know! A good photographer will be more than willing to go over your schedule with you and help you decide how many hours you need.

Should we do an engagement session? Yes! Did you get that? Let me say it again… yes!! An engagement session means that you get to meet your photographer, bond with them, and get to know what it feels like to be in front of their camera. On your wedding day you won’t have much time to warm up to the camera, so doing an engagement session before hand allows you to get comfortable and excited with having your picture taken. On top of all of that, it is great to have professional photos done of the two of you that can be used for save the dates, gifts for parents and grandparents, and just for hanging up all over the house. You can read more about engagement sessions in this post

How important is an album? If an album is even remotely in your budget, get an album. Your grandchildren are not going to treasure a disc of wedding images that will likely be out of date by then, but they will treasure a beautifully crafted album with your beloved photos in it. This album is something you will look through countless times to relive the beauty and emotion of your special day. Once you have it, it becomes something that is invaluable. But can’t we just order one of those books online? Well of course you can, and for some people those books are a great option. However, when you go with an album from your photographer, you are generally getting a top of the line, piece of art. The albums your photographer will give you cannot be bought by the average consumer, which usually means they are of much higher quality, come with warranties, and are going to be designed beautifully.

shaun and skyla walton wedding photography santa barbara california

How many photos should we expect to receive? All photographers have a different policy on this, but we tend to think about 50 photos per hour of coverage is a good amount. While some photographers may give upwards of 2,000 photos, we think that can be overwhelming. When it comes to your wedding photos, choose quality over quantity- it is better to have 400 stellar images, than 2,000 mediocre ones.

shaun and skyla walton wedding photography santa barbara california

How quickly can we expect to see our photographs? Every photographer differs on this greatly- from 48 hours to 6 months. When choosing a photographer, take this into consideration. How impatient are you? How much editing are you expecting from your photographer? This time varies so greatly because of many reasons, and while you may be dying to see your photos, remember that many photographers shoot upwards of 20 to 30 weddings per year that they need to edit, and this can take a lot time. If you are working with us, you can expect to see an online preview gallery within two weeks, and your full package within 90 days.

Robert & Chelsea – Colorful Hipster Wedding Shoot – Knapps Castle, Santa Barbara

“And you’ll always love me, won’t you?”
“Yes.”
“And the rain won’t make any difference?”
“No.”

-Ernest Hemingway

We shoot weddings because we love true, mad, passionate love. So when we met Robert and Chelsea, we couldn’t wait to get our cameras on them. They are that couple that can’t seem to take their eyes off each other, that couple that is constantly giggling, playing, and cuddling. We were so inspired by Robert and Chelsea’s love, along with their incredible sense of fashion (I mean really, look at them!) that we took them to Knapps Castle in Santa Barbara and captured their love on camera.

How To Plan Your Wedding Photography Schedule

Planning Your Wedding Photography Schedule

One of the most common questions we get from our couples is “How do we structure the day to get the most out of our photography?” And while every wedding is different, and each photographer has their own preferences, here are a few tips on scheduling your wedding day.

Preparation photos:

Start early! While most people assume that it only takes about a half hour to do their preparation shots, we recommend at least an hour and a half.  We know you want to enjoy your wedding, so we try to get as many of the important photos out of the way before the ceremony. During this pre-wedding time we not only take photos of you getting ready, but we take photos of the dress, shoes, bouquet, and all related accessories. We also capture candid moments, and your individual portraits.

A few extra tips:

  • Have your bouquet ready and delivered to where you are getting ready. This allows us to get photos of it before  the flowers wilt or get damaged.
  • Hang your dress on a nice hanger! There is nothing more distracting than a beautiful photo of your wedding dress on a plastic hanger.
  • If your bridesmaids will be helping you put on your dress, have them be fully ready and dressed when they do this. It looks much better in the photographs than having them in their pajamas still!
  • Keep your getting-ready space free of clutter and mess!
  • Think about the accessories you want photographed and keep them all together so your photographer knows exactly what you want photos of and where they will be located (this counts for guys too!)
  • Bring along a few sets of your beautiful and undamaged wedding stationary (invitations, save the dates, etc.) for your photographer to capture

(Separate) Wedding party photos:

Before the couple has seen each other, we like to take 20-30 minutes to take photos of the Bride with her bridesmaids and Groom with his groomsmen. This gives you a great opportunity to relax and bond with your friends while having beautiful and meaningful photos taken.

bridesmaids laughing - rustic pink wedding dresses - winery wedding solvang californiagroomsmen laughing - vintage chic malibu wedding - shaun & skyla waltonA few extra tips:

  • Another great reason to always opt for two photographers is that these separate wedding party photos can be taken at the same time.

The First Look:

A first look/first see is when the couple meets up at a beautiful location and sees each other for the first time. It is all ridiculously emotional and beautiful (let’s be honest- I cry every time) and every moment is captured on camera. And while there is the issue of some people feeling like they are going against tradition, this is something we highly recommend (but that’s for a whole ‘nother blog post!) This time is not only wonderful for you, but it is wonderful for us because it gives us time to do some really amazing couples portraits without having to keep you too much from your own wedding. We recommend scheduling 45 minutes to an hour for this.

first look - pasadena wedding - shaun & skyla walton wedding photography

Full wedding party photos:

Now that you have seen each other, you’re calm, excited and ready to just get married already. This is when we recommend you bring in the full wedding party for photos. We recommend about a half hour for this.

Details:

Once we have finished with your couple’s and group photos, we like to give you about a half hour  to relax and enjoy yourself before the ceremony. During this time we  photograph the details in the ceremony and reception space.

sanford winery wedding santa ynez - shaun & skyla walton wedding photography

A few extra tips:

  • If you can’t have the entire reception space ready by this time, ask your coordinator (or whoever is putting everything together) if they can have one table set up and ready during this time

Ceremony:

Every ceremony is different, so be sure to let your photographer know how long the ceremony will be and if you will be doing anything different we should know about- such as lighting candles, pouring sand, or even having your dog bring your rings.

romantic backyard montecito wedding - fernanda machado robert riskin - shaun & skyla walton wedding photography wedding ceremony in vineyard at sanford winery santa ynez - shaun & skyla walton wedding photography

A few extra tips:

  • If possible, stand in the shade or with the sun behind you during your ceremony. This keeps you from having to squint during the ceremony, while also providing much more flattering light.
  • If you are planning to use a sound system, make sure that speakers and cords are far from the space where you will be standing as these can be very distracting in photos.
  • If you are planning on having a sunset ceremony- do all of your formal photos before the wedding! You do not want to have your formal photos taken in the dark!

groom kissing bride in forest at calliote canyon ojai - shaun & skyla walton wedding photographywedding ceremony in forest at calliote canyon ojai - shaun and skyla walton wedding photography

Family photos:

It is often best to do family photos right after the ceremony because everyone is already together. Each group photo takes about 3-5 minutes depending on how organized and calm everyone is. We recommend restricting this to the family members that are closest to you; parents, grandparents, siblings, etc. We can always get photos of you with your second cousin twice removed spouse’s sister during the reception. Any more than seven groupings and this time gets more stressful, than fun and meaningful.

robert riskin & fernanda machado wedding photo - shaun and skyla walton photography

A few extra tips:

  • Have a coordinator, bridesmaid or friend stay for these photos to help keep people organized and together.
  • In the future, these photos will mean more to you than you can imagine, so lose the cheesy smile and step in close and give your parents a good old hug and kiss.

shaun and skyla walton photography - bridal portraits with family

Cocktail hour:

The great thing about doing the majority of your portraits before the ceremony, is that it gives you the chance to actually be a part of your cocktail hour. So have a drink, hug your friends and family, and celebrate that you’re married! We’ll be around to take photos of your guests and details.

Reception (part 1):

For most of our clients, we recommend going from your grand entrance directly into your first dance. Then, after your first dance, immediately going into the father daughter dance and mother son dance. Not only does this keep your guests entertained, but it allows us (depending on the location and time of year) to capture these things before the sun goes down, which equals better and more flattering light. After the dances we recommend going straight into eating, then cake cutting, bouquet toss, and garter toss. Keeping these events early and close together means that your guests will be there, sober, and fully attentive to what is going on.

A few extra tips:

  • Feed your vendors! This will make them so much happier, and want to work harder for you, I promise! We, being vegan, do not expect vendor meals and typically eat before and/or bring something light with us.
  • Doing toasts before food is served keeps your guests’ fully focused on whoever is speaking, rather than on their own food.
  • If you plan to keep and preserve your bouquet, toss a small “tossing bouquet” or a bridesmaid’s bouquet in order to avoid your bouquet being obliterated to the tune of “All the single ladies”

Sunset photos:

At some point during your reception, we will likely pull you aside and do some more photos as the sun goes down, giving you some (almost) private time with your brand new spouse while we capture those stunning, glowy and romantic photos that you’re just going to love!

shaun and skyla walton photography - sanford winery californiafernanda machado & robert riskin wedding photo - backyard montecito wedding - shaun and skyla walton photography

Reception (part 2):

Now that you have all of the formalities out of the way, it’s time to party! So get out on that dance floor and enjoy the day you have worked so hard for. Another benefit of doing all of “the big stuff” early means that your guests that may not be so interested in dancing and “partying down” are able to say their goodbyes, leaving the people who really want to be there to enjoy the rest of the night. And while we love this part of the wedding (and honestly, have a really hart time not boogy-ing down right there with you) you only need so many photos of your guests dancing. If you are not doing an exit of any sort, a good time for us to finish up is about 45 minutes after the dancing has started.

shaun and skyla walton photography - detail photographs at weddings

Grand exit:

If you are planning to do a grand exit, then we stay through the dancing until you’re ready to leave. While sparklers are always a grand exit favorite, many venues do not allow flaming, sparking sticks on their property (party poopers.) Bubbles, lanterns, glow sticks and dried lavender can all be fun and beautiful.

A few extra tips:

  • Walk slowly! I know you want to run, but walking slowly gives us a better chance to get more photos and gives your guests more time to see you.
  • If things are being thrown i.e. rice, confetti, flowers,  don’t look up! It is never fun to get that stuff in your eyes.
  • Smile, laugh giggle, yell, kiss! This is literally one of the best and most beautiful days of your life. Don’t be afraid to show how excited you are.
  • Stop and take a look back. Take a deep breath and take in every part of the day. This is a memory you will have forever!

Jenna & Johnny’s Romantic Rustic Beach Wedding Shoot – Summerland, California

California’s beaches are world renowned and rightly so. When you live in this state they’re something to be taken advantage of, especially if you’re passionate about the beach life. Jenna and Johnny are just such a couple. They’re super passionate about the ocean and it definitely shows as one would be hard pressed to find a couple as beautifully sun kissed as they are in the middle of California’s winter. On most days they’re out surfing and paddle boarding – loving life and soaking up the magic of the sea. Knowing this is what they’re passionate about and feeling inspired to put together a styled shoot we invited them to model for us in some rustic wedding attire on one of the beautiful beaches in Summerland California.

“For those searching for something more than just the norm. We lay it all down, including what others call sanity, for just a few moments on waves larger than life. We do this because we know there is still something greater than all of us. Something that inspires us spiritually. We start going down hill, when we stop taking risks.”

- Laird Hamilton

Jeremy Roloff and Audrey Botti – Forest Love Shoot – Santa Barbara, California

Love for Love’s Sake

This week we’re so  excited to share with you Jeremy and Audrey’s  ’love shoot’ – a love shoot is a photographic session organized for the simple purpose of capturing and appreciating the authentic connection shared between a couple.

Jeremy Roloff and Audrey Botti are a beautiful couple that share many of our interests such as a love of wild places and an appreciation for vintage and handmade objects, and the dream of one day owning a small piece of farmland. We got together with them and spent an incredible afternoon in our ‘backyard’ – the Los Padres National forest above Santa Barbara in California.

As with all love shoots, we tried to make this session reflect their personalities as much as possible. So on a cold, rainy day, we headed for the forest in Jeremy’s signature blue bus, where they curled up in a blanket and enjoyed a day of simply being together.

Enjoy!!

“Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails…

…so now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

For the Love of Love and Photography

We love taking time after our shoots to enjoy our surroundings! We are incredibly grateful to be able to work together as a couple, share in and capture the love of others photographically and work in beautiful environments. Thank you to everyone that has shared your love and story with us already!

Thank you!

Wow! We really want to say thank you for the tremendous support and feedback we have received on our new brand and website! We couldn’t be more excited to be officially working as a husband and wife team. While wedding season is winding down, we have a lot of projects we are working on and we cannot wait to share them with you.

Here is a preview of one of our recent shoots. Enjoy

Shannon & Jay – Retro Vintage Handcrafted Wedding – Heritage Square Museum, Los Angeles, California

It was her thirtieth birthday, they were crossing the street when he stopped and got down on one knee.  He said, “I don’t have a ring yet, but I will. I want you to know that I want this- that I am thinking about this.”

It wasn’t long before he was back at that same spot, ring and all, asking Shannon to be his wife.

Shannon and Jay met in art school while they were both pursuing a degree in graphic design. Along the way, they fell in love and started their dream business – Parallel-Play. As one might expect, a wedding thrown by designers is an amazing sight. In the months leading up to their wedding,  Jay and Shannon shared a lot of their inspiration with me – sending me mood boards, color pallets  and their flower inspiration. However, the one thing that stuck with me most is a photo they sent me from the movie, Big Fish - it exuded love, family, and warmth, with a slight vintage touch.

When we arrived at their ceremony location,  the Historic Heritage Square Museum, it couldn’t have been more perfect. The old houses and little white church had brought their vision to life. Along with stunning florals by Honey and Poppies, custom made letter press by the couple themselves, and tons of handmade details, Jay and Shannon had successfully created the wedding of their dreams. In the end their retro vintage handcrafted wedding turned out to be the perfect reflection of their personalities and it was an absolute pleasure to document.
